Stuart Gordon’s classic Re-Animator was unleashed on an unsuspecting world in 1985, a true masterpiece of 80’s horror. A fantastic blend of stylish gore and humour, it was a huge hit on video and it was no surprise that a sequel followed. Bride of Re-Animator is directed by Brian Yuzna, fresh from cult success with Society, and continues the dubious exploits of Drs Herbert West and Dan Cain.

Following the massacre at Miskatonic University, we catch up with West and Cain in civil war torn Peru, which provides them with plenty of bodies to experiment with. When the war heats up, the doctors flee back to Arkham and return to their jobs at the university. Not just content with re-animating the dead, West has designs on creating new life from re-animated body parts and ropes in the broken hearted Cain to assist him by using his dead girlfriend’s heart. Add to this a police detective hell-bent on proving West and Cain are responsible for the Miskatonic University massacre and the re-animated head of Dr Hill planning his revenge on them, and you have a lot of plot packed into its 97 minutes running time.

Jeffrey Combs, who reprises his role as Herbert West, is so much fun to watch. As the film moves on, his performance gets more and more manic. Bruce Abbot plays Dan Cain as the “straight man” in this double act, and as such, has a romantic subplot with the stunning Fabiana Udenio. Special mention must be made of David Gale as the deranged severed head of Dr Carl Hill.

As you would expect from an 80’s splatterfest, there are buckets of gore to be found with great SFX from Screaming Mad George and John Carl Buechler. The 2K restoration looks great, although a couple of scenes (which I am assuming were reinserted into the unrated cut) are a little grainy which is no doubt due to the limitations of the source material.

Extras include audio commentaries with Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Coombs, Bruce Abbott and the cast & crew, a new featurette – Brian Yuzna remembers Bride, a featurette about the SFX, an archive making of composed of behind the scenes footage, deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer.

Bride of Re-Animator is distributed by Arrow Video.
