A quick warning – this is my first tech related review!

When it comes to writing for Blueprint: Review, I tend to review films and run the occasional interview, but I’m always looking to expand my horizons and try my hands at something new. In my spare time, I tend to play video games and when the opportunity to test out Gioteck’s FR5 Racing Wheel popped up in my email, I couldn’t say no.

For those unfamiliar, Gioteck specialise in gaming accessories for all of the big consoles, and PC too. Their FR5 Racing Wheel is built for the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller, although it can be used on Valve’s Steam Deck, and PCs too, for games that support it. The setup’s extremely simple, after attaching the controller to the wheel, any game that supports motion steering. Games that support the feature on PlayStation 4 and 5 include Gran Turismo 7, plus its free demo version My First GT, alongside PS4 games such as Project CARS, DriveClub and the Wipeout Omega Collection.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent some time trying out all of the compatible games that I have access to and it’s been quite the experience. There’s three ways to utilise the driving wheel, you can clamp it to the table, use it mounted in your lap or just use the grip itself. I tested out all three methods and ended up sticking with the lap mounted option the most, as I found it the most comfortable and convenient. Those familiar with the Nintendo Wii’s Mario Kart Wii will be familiar with how Gioteck’s racing wheel works, but I was surprised with how robust and high quality the wheel feels.

Most of my time was spent with DriveClub and My First GT (unfortunately, I don’t have a copy of Gran Turismo 7 but this was the next best thing) and both games incorporate motion steering perfectly, and the wheel makes the entire experience all the more immersive. Sure, you can play these games without the wheel, but it doesn’t quite work the same as the controller is hovering in the air.

The only real downside to the product is how little of the PlayStation library supports motion steering in the first place. Again, the wheel can be used on PC, but I was unable to check out any games that supported it on my laptop, but according to Gioteck’s website, games like the Forza Motorsport and Horizon games are supported, which has me hopeful that the upcoming PS5 port of Forza Horizon 5 will offer the feature. If so, it might be the way I play that game going forward!

I’m not one to typically purchase gaming accessories, but considering that the RRP for the wheel is £39.99, I’d say it’s worth that price if you’re an avid fan of racing games, have the software that supports it and want to feel fully immersed into your favourite game. It’s a well-built and impressive product that’s brought me hours of fun, and aside from the small library of console games that are supported, there’s few things I can fault it for.

If you’re interested in picking the wheel up, here’s a link to Gioteck’s website where you can purchase it for £39.99 You can also purchase it at retailers such as Amazon and Argos.
