Let’s face it, Robert Rodriguez isn’t exactly the best filmmaker ever with movies such as Planet Terror, From Dusk Til Dawn and Spy Kids but he is quite good. However Machete, once a parody trailer from the movie Grindhouse, is now made into a movie and what a movie it is! Machete is about an ex-Federale who wants brutal, bloody revenge against his former boss who hired and betrayed him. Machete is definitely something that is not for the faint-hearted or the weak-stomached as this is non-stop violent action all the way through with, what is surprisingly, a decent revenge story, even if it has been done before. The action scenes are quite entertaining and will please fans of action movies with bloody, violent scenes as Machete provides this by the bucket-loads. The movie has an all-star cast with stars such as Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez and, of course, our lead Danny Trejo, who proves to be perfect for the role as the main character of the movie. All of the actors and actresses involved in the movie gave out an average performance, especially Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez, but don’t expect anything award-winning because you will be sorely disappointed. Machete also has some good characters and the character development is decent, although the pacing felt too fast in some parts. The characters are written quite well and there are a few of them that are likeable.

Director and writer Robert Rodriguez does a good job on Machete, even if the action means more to the movie than the story. This doesn’t mean that the story was terrible but it was hardly fantastic, in fact it was far from it but it could have been better than it was. The annoying thing about Machete is, without a doubt, it’s pacing on everything. It seemed that sometimes, it would blur into one and other times, it would be too slow. Also, another thing that spoils Machete is how predictable it is, not through the story, but the characters. You knew who they were and what they were going to do from the very first time you saw them in the movie and it spoils a bit of the fun. Overall though, if you like crazy, gory, action movies, Machete is something you should watch.

Machete is something that people may call rubbish but if you are to watch it, you must understand that this is not really supposed to be taken seriously at all. In fact, quite the opposite, this is a movie that pays respects to the terrible seventies exploitation movies and it really shows with unrealistic deaths, nude women and cheesy action scenes. Machete is fun, there’s nothing more to it. It was made to entertain us with it’s fun, over-the-top, cheesy action scenes and it succeeds in a brutal and violent fashion. However, even though it’s fun, it could have been better.

Great review Dazz! I’m beginning to think that Rodriguez is way overrated. I was in the minority of not liking this film. I get it was going for campy but that still didn’t make it entertaining for me.

I’ve long thought he was over rated. I loved Desperado when I was a kid, but going back it’s pretty dire, but not as awful as the third one. I love Dusk til Dawn, probably his best film for me. Sin City was alright, looked great, completely soul-less. Everything was dire!

I enjoy most of his films as silly bits of fun, but they’re always flawed and ultimately unsatisfying. Dusk Till Dawn is awesome though and the style of Sin City is very impressive. I’m one of the few people that quite enjoyed Planet Terror too, which Machete looks very similar to, so I’d still like to see it.
