It is the story of five college-age friends who travel to a cabin in rural Tennessee where the stumble upon the Book of the Dead, an ancient tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood. After unwittingly awakening the unspeakable terror told of in the book, each of the friends is transformed into the evil dead, one by one, except for Ash who has to fight the demons until daylight to survive.

Okay so it’s very rare that almost everything in a movie is quite bad yet it’s brilliant but The Evil Dead manages just that. The acting was on and off except for Bruce Campbell who played our hero Ash fantastically, his performance stands out in the movie however when the other actors had to play their characters possessed, they were truly terrifying and it made for brilliant viewing. The special effects most of the time was pretty awful but it was very good for a low-budget movie however I couldn’t help but notice that when they were doing shots of the moon, you could see a massive blue square around the moon. In saying this, the make-up and the gory effects were done rather well. The story was basic yet great and written well and the script was quite clever too.

This movie isn’t for the faint-hearted and the easily-scared as this could leave you having nightmares for weeks. I saw the full uncut version which was banned in several different countries in the eighties but got released in the nineties so if you don’t like blood or gore, don’t see this movie as it has plenty of it.

A low-budget horror classic, you don’t get horror movies like this anymore! A very original movie, I just hope this won’t be remade!
