Wow – harsh. I’ve not seen this but I’ve been a fan of all the films I’ve seen from Cassavetes. That said, I wouldn’t say I ‘love’ any of them. They’re generally pretty heavy going with a meandering pace. I do love the raw, unvarnished style of his films though, both in the performances and presentation.

I’ll have to give this a watch myself to see if you’re right about it.

I’d hardly call the violence and nudity here gratuitous or consider it exploitation. In fact there wasn’t a huge amount of actual nudity or truly graphic violence on display, much of it was shown in brief flashes, just off camera or implied (other than in a couple of key scenes). It’s more the idea of what is happening to the women that is disturbing. Plus, for me, for something to be considered exploitation you need to be getting some sort of thrill or enjoyment from the acts, and that certainly wasn’t the case here. I can kind of see where you’re coming from in that the women go through a lot of abuse and this is where the film channels its power, but I’d hardly call it exploitative.

Movie filled with gratuitous violence and nudity (actresses are anything but brave doing these)
Exploitation disguised as drama.

No matter how hard Lore tried, she couldn’t get those secret documents to burn. Which is odd as the soldiers she put on the fire went up instantly.

Nice review!

I also loved the opening shot as well as Dane Dehaan’s performance. I wasn’t bothered by the ending or Cooper’s performance though, I actually thought he did great.

Good review Jason. You can literally pin-point every similarity this movie has with countless other sci-fi flicks. That doesn’t mean it’s a terrible film, per se, it just means that it’s a bit conventional to watch and adds nothing to the final-proceedings.
