Out in the woods something unpleasant is lurking at the bottom of a giant sink hole, in this supernatural horror flick, filmed in Enniscrone, County Sligo in December 2018.

The Hole In The Ground follows the story of Sarah when she moves with her son Chris to a secluded house in the back of beyond to escape her past. Things do not get off to a good start as they are accosted on the road by an unsettling neighbour, leaving Sarah feeling uneasy and she has good reason to be. During the night Chris disappears into the woods surrounding their dilapidated house. When Sarah wanders into the wood to search for her son she finds a cavernous hole and an unnerving set of events begin to unfold with horrifying consequences.

Sarah finds her son in the woods but pretty quickly she suspects all is not what it seems when her son starts to display some rather odd behaviour, which will quite frankly leave you feeling queasy . In his debut feature writer-director Lee Cronin creates a disturbing pervading sense of doom and hopelessness which builds in tension and delivers a healthy serving of scares. The Hole In The Ground is supported by spell binding performances to provide an enthralling and completely absorbing story-line, Seana Kerslake is utterly convincing as the long suffering mother and James Quinn Markey is marvellous as her incredibly creepy son Chris.

Masterful filming sets the scene in the Irish countryside and is perfectly accoumpanied by Stephen McKeon’s foreboding score, The Hole In The Ground is an impressive first film which will leave you feeling uneasy and unnerved. Lee has lavished his film in atmosphere to provide a rich obsessively disturbing experience which will leave you reaching for a mirror…just to make sure all is as it seems.

The Hole In The Ground is out on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital Download on the 8th July 2019. I reviewed the DVD which has excellent visual and audio quality and also contains the fascinating bonus feature Inside The Hole In The Ground which tells you all you need to know, including that Chris has a real double.
