For me, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has been one of a few movies I was looking forward to watching in 2010 and I’m happy to say that I was not disappointed. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is definitely one of my favourite movies, even if it does have a short and stretched story. The movie itself is about Scott, who must defeat his girlfriend Ramona’s seven evil exes in order to win her heart. So if you’ve seen the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and you’ve seen the stylish effects and the colourful scenes, you might probably think that the best parts are in the trailer. If you were thinking that, you’d be wrong. The special effects in the movie is definitely brilliant and dazzling and all of the fights were actually rather amazing and exciting to watch. So with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, you have a romantic comedy with a touch of action and a dash of geeky references which I loved. One scene I loved was when Scott was dreaming about Ramona with the theme to The Legend of Zelda in the background and Scott shouts “Hey!” to catch Ramona’s attention. If you understand why I found that scene funny then this movie is definitely for you. Normally I am a story guy, no matter what the genre is, I look for a good story I can sink my teeth into but, whilst Scott Pilgrim vs. The World does have a good story, I was looking forward to the next fight scenes even more. The story is quite good as we follow Scott on his fight to win Ramona’s heart with some funny consequences and some great dialogue.

As you may see from the trailer, the main thing that people may possibly love is the visuals and if you are watching the movie for the visuals, you will not be disappointed. The idea of mixing beat-em-up arcade games (or games in general) with real life is actually quite genius. Yes, this may have been done before but Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, for me, raises that bar a little higher. Another thing about Scott Pilgrim vs. The World that was great was the characters and how they were written. They were also brilliant and you cared about each of them a lot, even the ones who didn’t get a lot of screen time. My favourite character, in particular, was Knives Chau, who is Scott’s girlfriend. She made me laugh a few times in the movie and she was in it for some parts but I cared about her more than any other character. The acting is great and I couldn’t fault it. Michael Cera plays himself, like he always does in movies, but he’s great as Scott Pilgrim and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was perfect for the role as Ramona. The other actors, including the actors who are in league of evil exes, played their parts brilliantly. The only fault I could give Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is that in a couple of parts, the movie was slow but other than that, it’s a feast for the eyes and it’s something that director Edgar Wright should be very proud of. 

Easily in my favourite movies of the year, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is something to be seen just for the visuals alone. The fights, the stunts, the gaming and comic-book references and the acting were all brilliant and the direction was near perfection. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a must-see for every gamer and comic-book fan everywhere, you will not be disappointed!
