Yes you read that right. The eighties classic Top Gun is set for a sequel, 24 years after the original film hit the screens. It appears to be more of a personal project for the new film’s plane obsessed director David Ellison.

David directed Flyboys in 2006, a World War 1 drama that seemed to evade most people’s radar. He’s now set his sights on Top Gun 2 and has hired Oscar winning scriptwriter Christopher McQuarrie to write a draft.

Paramount seem to like the idea of a sequel and had originally offered it to the original Top Gun director Tony Scott. Tom Cruise is also set to reprise his role of Maverick, but it’s more likely to be a cameo than the lead role.

Best get those aviators hunted out….
