Known as one of the scariest movies of all time, The Exorcist is something that I had always wanted to watch and I am so glad I did. I am a massive horror movie fan and I love anything that can scare me, creep me out or shock me. Alas, not a lot of movies are properly able to do this with me. I am not afraid to admit that, for the first time, of all of the movies I have watched, The Exorcist has succeeded in shocking me, in creeping me out and actually scaring me at the same time. Unfortunately these days, not many horror movies are so great and not a lot of them have any love or detail in them or manage to actually do it’s job to scare you but with The Exorcist, it truly is a remarkable horror masterpiece. This is what The Last Exorcism should have been! Everything from the acting to the directing is simply perfect to the last detail. The story and the plot is pretty basic but that’s the beauty of The Exorcist, sometimes less is more and The Exorcist is an example of just that. The greatest thing about The Exorcist is the truly frightening story it tells of how a mother battles to figure out what has happened to her daughter and how her daughter is slowly becoming possessed by a demon. Another thing that I adored about The Exorcist was the exceptionally brilliant cast as they played their characters fantastically, they really couldn’t have done any better if they tried. Ellen Burstyn was brilliant as Chris and there’s nothing you could fault about her acting skills, Jason Miller was also fantastic as his character Father Damien but the real actress who completely stole the show with her magnificent performance as possessed Regan was Linda Blair. Her character went from sweet to evil within hours and she had the hard job of making the audience terrified and convinced that she was really possessed and she succeeded with ease.

The Exorcist has some truly fantastic scenes that will scare the pants off of you and that is thanks to the special effects, the soundtrack and the make-up. The special effects and the make-up were done extremely well as they were very convincing and realistic. As if the movie wasn’t scary enough already, thanks to the soundtrack, it’s even more scarier and creepier as it adds so much tension to some of the scenes and is timed perfectly. William Peter Blatty, who had also written the novel of The Exorcist, really knows how to frighten his audience and knows the perfect timing from each scene and so I must credit him in saying that he is definitely one of the best horror writers after experiencing The Exorcist.

The Exorcist boasts a magnificent cast, a fantastic story, terrific writing and directing and some truly memorable scenes that will haunt you in your nightmares. From the second the movie started, you couldn’t take your eyes off the screen and you didn’t want to blink in case you missed anything. There were times when you saw Regan possessed doing some graphic and disturbing things and, even though you wanted to turn your head a couple of times, you just couldn’t take your eyes off the screen. That is when you knew The Exorcist is truly something special and very memorable and is something that could not be replaced. They just do not make movies like this anymore and I really wish they would. I hope that they do not remake this movie, as this is simply timeless and shouldn’t ever be touched, simply out of respect. The Exorcist is, without a doubt, the scariest movie I have ever seen and has definitely become a favourite of mine. I urge anybody who is a horror movie fan to watch this, as this is definitely something every horror fan needs to watch. This is obviously best watched at night with all of the lights off and no distractions. After watching this, try not to have any nightmares!
