There is one film that has grabbed more headlines than any other so far at this years Venice Film Festival. Black Swan is Darren Aronofsky’s portrayal of Classical ballet, featuring murder, drugs, self harm and lesbian sex.

The film stars Natalie Portman as a ballerina who finds herself in a web of competitive intrigue and sacrifices much more than her feet and in order to get the lead role in the classic ballet, Swan Lake. Aronofsky who won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2008 for The Wrestler, said he sees the 2 films as “companion pieces”, seeing similarities between the world of wrestling and ballet in the way performers use their bodies in extremely physical ways.
Aronofsky struggled to get into the ballet world, “it’s a very insular world and they really have absolutely no interest in anything other than ballet”, “Most of the time when you show up and say, ‘i’m going to make a movie about you’ all the door open up. With ballet they just shrugged and didn’t return calls”
Slowly, and with the help of dancer Benjamin Millepied (Portman’s real life boyfriend), they managed to get the approval they needed, persuading people they were doing something cool.
Black Swan was the first of 3 opening films and is competing for this years Golden Lion prize.
