It’s 1962 and change is in the air in Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big hair and big dreams, has only one passion in life – to dance on The Corny Collins Show. When her chance arrives, she grooves her way into instant stardom and the eyes of teen dream Link Larkin. But with the program’s scheming stage manager against her, trend-setting Tracy will need the help of her best friend Penny, her big-hearted mother and sassy co-host Motormouth Maybelle to show the world that all it takes to make a dream come true is a toe-tappin’ beat and a little Hairspray!
Hairspray was a very nice surprise because you expect something corny and cheesy which make no mistake, you do get but you also get a strong and serious message from it as well. The story was great about the underdog achieving goals and, at the same time, deals with the issue of being different and it was nice to see. The characters were well written and were a joy to watch and the acting was brilliant, John Travolta being the best as Tracy’s mother, Edna. Also, Queen Latifah should be recognised for her great performance in this as well. The songs were good to watch and so were the dances. The direction and the writing were done very well.
Hairspray is a feel-good movie that’s there for you when you’re feeling low and need a little bit of cheering up. I liked it, it was a very nice surprise as, even though it’s all singing and dancing and fun, there’s also a couple of serious messages in the movie. While kids may not see it, adults will. It deals with being different, ignoring doubts to achieve what you want and race and the strong messages are shown throughout the movie and the way it’s portrayed in the movie is great. I thought the singing and dancing was brilliant. There were some songs that had my toes tapping and there was one song that was brilliant to listen to and it was by Queen Latifah who has an amazing voice. Make no mistake, there’s a lot of singing and dancing so if you don’t like musicals, don’t rent or buy this. However, if you’re looking for a cheesy, feel-good movie and a bit of light-hearted fun, then you’ll like it.
I thought it was a great movie. Fun, light-hearted and serves as a sunshine on a cloudy day but it’s also something not to take too seriously otherwise you won’t enjoy it.
